Red Engine Studios: "The Little Engine That Could"
Red Engine Gallery Show: "The Little Engine That Could"
Join Red Engine Studios on July 16th, 2011, from 8pm-midnight, in celebrating their 1-year anniversary! I'm honored to be a part of this event and look forward to contributing some artwork.
Red Engine Studios was founded by industry veterans Steve Jung and Jung Park. As immensely talented designers, they have solidified themselves amongst the best of the best in the entertainment industry. Having worked on films such as Tron Legacy and Transformers RotF, as well as the God Of War video game series, these guys are just scratching the surface of an, already, admirable career.

Fantasy Drawing: Step-By-Step

UPDATE 08/05
This is a commission I'm doing for a buddy of mine. I wanted to show my working process for this type of drawing, so here we go!
Step 1
I lay everything in lightly with a pencil. The image was darkened a little bit in Photoshop so that it's easier to see on your screen. In this stage, I work out the composition, proportions, and big blocks of detail.

Step 2
In this stage, I go over the rough sketch and start flushing out the detail. I don't erase too much at this point, unless there are areas that require considerable corrections—the darker lines push the lighter lines to the back. I'll make adjustments to the pose, if necessary, and continue finalizing the details until I take the rest of the piece to this level of finish. (I don't like the way the girl's eyes turned out, so I'll adjust that in the next step)
Step 3
I use a kneaded eraser to lighten up the pencil sketch, just enough to maintain my "guidelines" to ink over. I'm still making adjustments as I ink the piece, though. You can see where I've modified the position and proportion of the guy's right arm, and I've erased the girl's face, which I'll figure out later. The same goes for the guy's legs, which are still very abstract.
Normally, I work much faster and thrown in design elements as they pop into my head, but since this one is going to a good friend, I'm taking my time.

Step 4
The inking is finally finished, and all the pencil lines are erased—this piece is almost done.
Step 5
I take a Copic marker and add in some value to break up the lights and darks. Normally, I would go a little further with the marker rendering, but this one just needs some quick indications of value. Once that's finished, I put in an abstract background and this one is finished!
Here is the complete step-by-step:

WonderCon and Capcom!
For those of you who will be attending WonderCon in San Francisco this year, drop by the Capcom booth #829 and say hi!
I will be sketching and signing at the booth from Friday, April 1 – Saturday, April 2. Look for the artist's table where you'll find myself and Long Vo, an amazing artist who has done quite a bit of work for Capcom's Street Fighter!
Hope to see you there!

A BIG "thank you" to my buddies, Francis (at Capcom) and Eric! They were the driving force that got me in the book!
So, without further hulabaloo, here is the final piece. Enjoy!

From the vault
I though I'd start posting some work that you may not have seen. I'll be going through my archives and loading them up here, every now and then. Today, I have a Spider-Man piece that I did a while back. This was done for fun, and I haven't had a chance to go in and ink it yet. Maybe I'll get around to it one of these days.

Ahsoka sketch
A quick sketch from last night. I've been working so much in digital lately, that it felt good to go back to pen and paper.
Why does Ahsoka have a hooka? Who knows... Maybe that's what she does in her spare time.

San Diego Comi-Con 2010 recap
This year, I was invited by Capcom (courtesy of Francis M., and Eric P., who initially set us up) to be a featured artist to sketch at their booth for this year's San Diego Comi-Con! The booth set-up was awesome and turnout was great! Capcom really did a great job in getting the space to look all sorts of kickass! The SDCC traffic was more than I'd expected—I was originally slated for three hours of sketching, but ended up staying for just a little over six, and took up the time slot for Capcom artist extraordinaire, Long Vo.
Long, if you read this, sorry about that. I thought we'd be sketching side-by-side, man!
Francis, thank you for all you've done, and continue to do! I really appreciate it, good sir!
Eric, like Batman and Robin, like Clu and Rinzler, partners in crime, my friend. Thanks for setting me up while I was down there! (Tron: Legacy action figures in stores now!!! Go check them out!)
Once the Capcom session was finished, it was off to the races to try and buy as much as I could. Unfortunately, Hasbro's 19" Galactus (sold out), Kid Robot Dunny exclusives (sold out), Gears Of War: Jace Stratton (sold out), Chris Sanders' 2010 sketchbook (missed it), Adam Hughes' Cover Run (sold out)... You see a pattern here? Needless to say, I saved myself a lot of money this year.
Until next time, it's back to the drawing board!
